In this sobering episode of TV series Nigel Latta, scientists and doctors alike have the same message: Aotearoa needs to take a good look at its drinking culture. When this series was made, a can of ready-to-drink spirits cost less than a bottle of water, and it was estimated that harm caused by alcohol cost New Zealand approximately $14.5 million per day. Latta (and others) argue that the government ignored key recommendations from a 514-page report that would have had the most impact. This episode was one of two directed by Justin Pemberton (Chasing Great, the Emmy nominated Golden Hour).
...for quite some time we'd be drinking Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Wednesday. What I'm kind of grappling with in my head is, have I literally lost points off my IQ because of that binge drinking during that critical period of my life?– Presenter Nigel Latta reflects on his drinking days at Otago University, early in this episode
